It is always a pleasant surprise when there is a good cafe embedded in a book store and the famous Donner, now situated in the former historical ABN AMRO bank, redeveloped as part of Rotterdam Forum, has a spacious establishment on the second floor, where coffee, cake, drinks and several breakfast and lunch options can be ordered. Good coffee, tasty cake, produced by the bakery chain Holtkamp and efficient and friendly table service by the waitress. However, the reason that I rate Donner Cafe only three points and that I won't return in a hurry is the extortionate prices for a simple cappuccino and let's face it, a small portion of cake. As I live in the Netherlands I am used to elevated prices in cafes and restaurants, compared to neighbouring countries, and the recent round of inflation didn't help to keep prices reasonable, but the prices in Donner Cafe, which is only a simple enterprise in a book shop, are really out of proportion.
The ice cream and milkshake were so bland and tasteless that I felt compelled to comment. My 7 year old nephew refused to eat the vanilla ice cream I bought for €3(Small size), saying it was awful! A place in a great location with great staff, they need to change their supplier immediately!
Google removed my negative review after six months. A review that is 100% based on truth, but I will do it again.
I worked there as a delivery person and in the kitchen. Shawarma that is scooped from a large container into a smaller container that falls to the ground while being scooped should not be thrown away. I wanted to throw it away but was told to put it back in the bin (yuk). Sauce that has been used by customers in the dining area is also reused, but I think this is a known fact about these kinds of things. Started delivering the first day and had received quite a few tips but didn't know I could keep them. Owner with a fake friendly smile asked how much tip I had and showed him. He says thank you and gives me a euro as if I should be grateful for that too.
After a colleague asked if I had some tips, I told him that story and he told me that tips are for me. I eventually stopped there quickly, of course, because I don't work for scammers. And of course I never ate anything there again. I prefer to go to a clean tent. Now I don't know why this was removed by Google, but of course I have an idea.
I filed an objection but couldn't even provide an explanation and if this happens again I will write it again and again.
A nice place to grab a bite to eat and drink while visiting the museum. The selection is excellent. The acoustics inside are a bit noisy, and the service is a bit slow; you have to ask for attention. A system where you order at the counter seems more efficient to me.
Last Sunday ordered chicken tenders menu and a schnitzel with hunter sauce. There was no potato gratin to order so I also ordered fries. Despite the fact that it was mentioned that it could take a while before the order was delivered, fortunately that was not too bad. But anyway the fries were half-fried and cold, there was no salad and the chicken tenders were a bit overcooked. The spring onions that are normally included did not look good and were inedible. Snitzel was actually the only thing that was good. Despite the fact that I sent an email I did not receive a response. So that is why I am here anyway. Too bad it turned out this way but for now the schnitzel king is a thing of the past for me.
Best croissants I’ve ever had. We went twice while we were here. There’s a Vietnamese barista there who’s super cute. On the off chance she’s reading this my Instagram is mylesharrison.jpeg if you want to talk more
I ordered 2024 online for the first time (to Germany). I tried it four more times, but the legendary, crunchy taste of the Diyarbakır Burma was nowhere to be found. Secondly, since it arrived by mail, the packaging was poor, and the syrup had spilled out of the package. Thirdly, before writing here, we emailed a complaint in English and Turkish, but received no response.
We went into the shop at 14.45 looking for a light snack. The first thing on the menu was ham and cheese which the cashier said was available. Ordered 2 rolls one ham salad and one ham and cheese. Then told no ham available. We had 2 cheese rolls one with salad. Might aswell not have bothered to be honest. Poor quality food, surly staff and then she didn't want to accept our note she wanted small change! Never known Holland to be so unfriendly.
We love coming here for a meal or a snack. We enjoy it every time. The service is great, and the chef (owner) beams as he prepares the dishes. And that's reflected in the food.
Before ordering, we asked the waitress if the mustard soup had speck in it, and they said that it was gonna be on the side, so we ordered it. There was no speck, so we asked again, and they said they didn’t have it.
Food was overall mediocre, soup was not directly bad, just small portions.
For the price you pay it’s not a good amount of food.
